At the age of 8, if you're looking for additional games, I'd probably start with:

1. Super Mario Galaxy

2. Mario Party 8

3. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga.

All excellent age appropriate games. Yes, you do battle Imperial Forces in Lego Star Wars, but come on, they're just legos and break apart into little lego blocks. It's not just a great game, it's hysterial, filled with unexpected humor and paradies of all 6 movies--and with 36 levels, he'll be playing it for a long time to come. It's the favorite Wii game of both our 4 year old grandson as well as his 15 year old nephew. Even adults we know who HATE the Star Wars movies absolutely love this game!

Super Mario Galaxy? Well, it's considered the best made game for the Wii to date and at the age of 8, he should easily be able to play it. Oh, and there's also a "star mode" that would enable you, or a friend, to play the game with him.

Mario Party 8. I recommend this because it's a great party game that he would be able to play with friends. Up to 4 players can play together, each taking a turn with everyone playing a minigame together at the end of each round--plays like a board game, with the objective being to capture the most stars possible, and whoever does so, wins the game! The game also has a certain amount of "luck" built into it meaning that younger inexperienced players have a good fighting chance of winning against more skilled players and adults.

Rather than buying a gamecube controller I would recommend you get the Wii "classic controller" which can be used to play the gamecube games as well as the games you can buy and download off the virtual console. The advantage of the "classic controller" is you attach it to your Wiimote, just like you attach the nunchuk to your Wiimote, and then use the "classic controller" instead, with the Wiimote functioning as a "wireless connection" between the controller and the console.

As far as anything else you should buy him to go along with the Wii? You may want to buy "Wii Play", which contains an extra Wiimote as well as the Wii Play game disk which contains 9 minigames. You may also want to buy an extra nunchuk, and that way he would be all set up for 2 player games.

As far as anything else you might want to get him to go along with all that for his birthday? I don't know, maybe a motorcycle? Or his own helicopter?

He would need a gamecube controller to play the older gamecube games on the Wii.
I really like the game Elebits, I am not eight but this game must be rated G and it is a lot of fun. The new Mario game looks amazing as well.

My son is 8.5. We've had the Wii for about a year now. He has really enjoyed WarioWare Smooth Moves, although part of that might be laughing at his parents' attempts to do the moves. The Wii Sports that comes with the console is fabulous for learning how to play. My son still plays this game. Your son truly won't need anything else for a while.

If you or your Mother would like to add in additional items, I'd recommend:
* another controller (comes free with Wii Play - although those games are very much like Wii Sports)
* an additional nunchuck
* the wonderful fabulous Recharge Station or equivalent (the Wii eats batteries - a rechargable option is extremely helpful)
* a cooling station such as the Chill Station (We got this on the recommendation of my brother. I can't report on if extra heat is generated by the unit, as we've always had the cooler.)

I hope your son enjoys his new gift!

I agree with Cauldron. You should get an extra Wiimote (can buy it for $40) or buy Wii Play which contains 9 games PLUS a Wiimote. You will also want an extra nunchuck. That way you and your son or a friend can all sit (or should I say stand) and play together. Games are more fun when you have someone to play with you.
Games for an 8 year old. Probaby Super Monkey Banana Blitz, ANY Mario game and Wario Smooth Moves would be the best.
