For some strange reason, the best rock music seemed to come out of the period of the mid to late 60's into the early 70's, be it the war, politics, sexual revolution, television or civil rights, our music at the time was the best there ever was and is cosistantly played on radio stations across the US today in the year 2007.....why?

I say between 1965 and 1982 were the golden years of rock, with a brief resurgence from 1991-1996 before it died for good. The reason I extend it up to 1982 is to include all of Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, all the great American guitar rock that you hear in the movie Dazed and Confused, the later years of the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Ramones, the early days of U2 and the Talking Heads, and the prime of the Grateful Dead's live performances.

I think you answered your own question as to why the music was better then. It was an era when the younger generation became extremely involved in what was happening in the world and many rebelled in the only way they knew how and music is such a perfect way to say what needs saying. It was the first time in history where the younger people actually stood up for what they thought was wrong with the "establishment".

I would say 1963 to 1973. Because of what you have already alluded to, my feeling is that the artists had something to actually write about with which the majority of listeners identified. Take away specific groups seeking a national voice; strife on our shores and away; a sense of experimentation for a greater good; actual happiness and a real sense of seeking unity, and you have music groups writing and singing about how crappy they feel, just like we hear nowadays.

I am not sure I would agree with this but I gave the star as it is a very good question. For me I think the newer stuff (headbangers) is not that good as they are limited on the music they use. But with the inovative musicans we have had the past to present how could one say for sure. From Hendrix to Tom Shultz to Eric Johnson to Joe Satriani well you get the idea it is tough to say.

That's very subjective. If I had to name one it would be "The Beatles". I saw them twice and they were great. I don't think we will ever see a period like again that for good music. There is so much crap out there these days.

in metal, the 80's were the golden years, but yea i don't know why music from that era gets so much airplay today. it might be because of the sheer amount of baby boomers alive who like that music.

i don't know. but that was a good time for music
