I'm writing an essay for a contest and I've decided to do it on Gettysburg. I want the essay to stand out but I'm unsure of what I should write about relating to Gettysburg.

Examples:
It's effect on the South
It's effect on the North
New tactics

What if you wrote about the battle's effect on the town of Gettysburg?

When you mention Gettysburg today many can tell you it was a battlefield in the Civil War and even possibly quote Lincoln's Gettysburg address ... BUT ... what happened to Gettysburg?

Did it continue to exist? What was it known for before the Civil War? What kind of people lived there? Were those people for or against the War?

That should get you started!

You could title your essay:

"Whatever Happened to Gettysburg's Address?"

I like Rogerws's suggestion. If you visit Gettysburg, you'll see that tourism is now its major industry. The town abounds with motels, restaurants, tour buses, souvenir shops, living history exhibits, and Lincoln impersonators. You could also compare and contrast Gettysburg with Sharpsburg, Maryland (not far away), the site of the other major battle (Antietam)fought in Union territory. Lincoln came there, too--but he didn't make a speech. Perhaps as a result, you could walk from one end of Sharpsburg to the other and, except that there's a national cemetery at the east end of town, hardly know that a battle had been fought there.

Maybe you could go into some detail about what happened on the 3 days...also maybe the terrain of Gettysburg...(lol, if u live anywhere near it, go! It's so beautiful, I've been there twice and I'm going again in May)

you might also try exploring how the Battle of Gettysburg changed the 2nd - 6th - 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry along with the 19th Indiana outlook towards the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry as they became part of the famous Iron Brigade who were of the 1st Brigade 1st Division 1st Army Corps of the Army of the Potomac ( Iron Brigade was also known as " The Tall Black Hat Brigade ).
