2.3 is a newer engine. Go for that one.

Does either engine use a turbo??? That is the engine I would go for. Turbos properly engineered create extra power when needed and provide fuel savings when not in use. Having owned 2 turbo cars in the past, it's hard to go back to a normally aspirated car. Last week I took a new Mazda crossover with the 2.3 turbo in it. It was very impressive. Then I went to see the new one from Acura with a turbo and FELL IN LOVE. It also was a 2.3 liter. It is not always true that an engine of lower displacement (internal size) is better for MPG. It depends on other factors, like how many valves and how well the transmission is geared. Before you buy that Mazda3, take an Audi A3 with the new DSG trans for a test drive. It has a 200 HP engine that is only 2.0 liters. It will go 0-60 in less than 7 seconds and still return almost 40 MPG highway. If you are lucky enough to find a used one (on the web, maybe) you can save thousands and get a car with an indefinite warranty. Also, they are made from 2-side galvanized steel and aluminum and won't rust out in the future. Check it out!!!!

a 2.3 is a larger measure that 2.0 so it uses more air and fuel creating more power and speed so if you want a slow mazda choose either one and if you want a fast car buy a big v8
