If it is ABSOLUTELY necessary for you to drive, take off or loosen the radiator pressure cap and take a gallon container of water/antifreeze mixture with you. Without pressure the leak in the head gasket will be minimal, but your coolant will evaporate quickly. Keep the car's internal heater and blower on maximum. Any damage to the cylinder head and/or block will already have been done.

THIS IS ONLY A GET-YOU-HOME FIX!

It depends on the type of engine, if its a rover K series engine then the damage can be massive. The K series has an aluminium head and block, the head bolts travel all the way through the block and hold the main bearings in place.
When the engine overheats the cylinder head can warp or even crack. My advice would be to get the car to the garage ASAP.

is it a k-series engine? if so its not an uncommon problem. I wouldn't drive it around, our you risk doing further damage, as it is now water and oil could be mixing, overheating could result, and you could end up with a warped head which will need skimming. Get it to a garage and have it checked soon, if done early you may get away with just a new head gasket.

No, it won't. The car will probably keep going for quite a while, but you will cause very serious engine damage. It could over heat, and cause the head to warp, which is very expensive to replace, there could be oil in the coolant system or vice versa, both of which will cause very serious damage. Stop driving the car now, and either get it repaired or scrap the car/sell it for spares/repair depending on age.
