I think you would really enjoy Neil Gaiman. Try starting with 'Neverwhere' (urban fantasy, about a man who gets caught up in a world below London), or the wonderful 'American Gods'. Gaiman's writing is a mixture of fantasy, horror and occasionally sci-fi, but he is incredibly literate and creative. I also highly recommend his short story collections 'Fragile Things' and 'Smoke & Mirrors,' and the 'Sandman' graphic novels (which helped revolutionize modern comics).
If you enjoyed 'Harry Potter', you should also check out 'His Dark Materials', the trilogy by Philip Pullman. Again, a very rich fantasy world, written at the young adult level.
If you like pure fantasy, read George RR Martin's 'A Song of Ice & Fire' series. It's like 'Lord of the Rings' meets The War of the Roses--the world he has created is incredibly detailed & complex, but never boring. The focus is less on magic and more about the many characters who are vying for power.

Possibly Wicked by Gregory Maguire. The hit musical was based on this book and although it is about magic that's not why I would recommend it. It has a lot of political and philosophical depth which a reader of Lord of the Flies might enjoy, while still having a good storyline.
It is about the journey of the Wicked Witch of The West in the run up to the time frame of "The Wizard of Oz", and her relationship with Galinda, the Good Witch. It doesn't have much to do with the fairytale, Judy Garland sort of style though.

If you want a free online read try "Gospel Enigma." A Harry Potter like hero and his little sister take on the Great Theologians. Highly engaging and quite informative.
It's at New Free Books, right at the top of the page.

Night Shift - Stephen King
It's a collection of short stories from early in his career... My favourites from the book are Jerusalem's Lot, and Strawberry Spring.
You may also like Alice Cooper Golf Monster... if you're into his music...

For something really different try A.M. Homes. She is at once very funny, gross, surprising, and entertaining. My faves by her are Music for Torching, The End of Alice and This Book Will Save Your Life.
Also very entertaining is Dave Eggers. Try his Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius or You Shall Know Our Velocity.
Another of my all time faves is David Foster Wallace's The Broom of the System.
Have fun making your choices! You've got great suggestions!

Halcyon by James Swallow. The book is about 300 pages long, an extensive vocabulary, science fiction, based on the Stargate Atlantis series. The story is about a team of explorers who travel to another planet where they discover their worst enemy has somehow been subdued...

"Cry to heaven" by Anne Rice
This book is just fantastic, takes place in Venice and goes into detail about the life of singing castrati (boys whose testicles were cut off at a young age to preserve their singing voice).
