It depends on the motherboard and the price is a pretty good way of guessing (the more expensive board being the better one) however as intel make processors I'd of thought the motherboards would be optimized for the processor and thus better, it all depends what you want to do really. I'd personally go with intel.

Unlike what some say, theres a lot more to a motherboard than just the northbridge chipset. I use Asus boards in almost all my builds but have used some Intels also. One thing to watch out about Intel boards is that a lot of them dont allow overclocking and, the ones that do, have lackluster clocking. Best thing to do is go to newegg and read the reviews from people who actually bought the board you're considering and see how they've liked or disliked it. With the same exact chipset one board can be a dog and the other a great clocker. Any motherboard comparision review will show you that. Some boards are simply designed better and have better bios. Otherwise nobody would buy the $250 P35 Asus boards and use the $70 ECS P35 boards instead. If its a high-end MSI board you will get more performance out of it because you'll have more tweaking options in the bios.

The MSI will almost always outperform the standard Intel board. And no offense to the guy above me, but this notion of the most expensive being the best is just ridiculous.

And two boards with the same 'specs' from different brands can give very different results. You need to be careful who you take advice from, and probably take some time to do some reading yourself. When I want reviews, I always go to Anandtech.com and tomshardware.com

What model are you looking at?

I usually lean towards Asus, but MSI is my second choice.

you have to define "performance" really. If you factor crashes into the equation, Intel boards tend to be more stable, but give you less control. MSI (why MSI specifically?) may have more options like overclocking features, which can boost raw speed, but that can lead to stability problems if you don't know what you're doing.

cdabexx said it perfectly.
You can have an Intel nForce 680i board, or an MSI nForce 680i board. But the general rule stays, MSI would outperform Intel as Intel is aimed more at corporates and office environments, where MSI is aimed more at gamers and power users.

It really comes down to preference, chipset/BIOS features, bus speed which then ultimately affects how much money your going to be putting in RAM and how many "onboard" devices it has.

There are a lot of sites which will benchmark boards against others. You can find some at www.tomshardware.com but your not going to notice any difference in performance between two same spec boards of different brands

The brand doesn't matter, what matters is the chipsets that are in the motherboard. As a general rule, the more they cost the better they perform. Look at---Pricewatch.com---for best prices.
