Sometimes my dad borrows my car to go to some local store, which is fine. However, almost every time he does it, he determines that i don't have enough gas, even if there is like a quarter or a tank or half a tank, so he go to the gas station and fill it up. Then he will come home and say "i had to fill up your car, you owe me $30."

True i would have to fill it up eventually but i don't always have the money just lying around to pay for that. It takes time to get paid, so i always end up getting asked "when are you going to have my money?"

Wouldn't we both just be happier if he just let me deal with it on my own?

i would thank him and tell him that the reason that there was only a quarter of a tank of gas is because you don't have the money to fill it up right now. and as soon as you get it you'll give him his money back.

Tell him thats enough gas to go to the store and back, and if he wants to go any ferther then he has to buy himself its your car and it's your gas already thats in the tank. And before he leaves tell him that if he fills up on gas (that not needed it) your not gonna pay him, cause you told him.

You should ask your dad to respect your vehicle and although it is thoughtful of him to put gas in it for you, sometimes the reason you are low on gas is because you are low on money. Ask him to let you do it yourself from now on.

Whose name is on the car? Yours or dad's?
If it's in your name. hide the keys. If he owns it there isn't much you can do. Tell him to start a running tab and you'll pay him when you can. But DO pay him. Don't just say you will and then not do it.

Yes it is your car and you don't ask him to fill it up so it is his decision and you shouldn't owe him for filling up your car.
Put one of those little post-it notes on your steering wheel telling him if he fills it up it is his idea to do so and you aren't responsible for his decisions.
