The "Odd Thomas" series by Dean Koontz. There are three books, starting with "Odd Thomas" then "Forever Thomas" then "Brother Thomas"-- which had a kind of weak last bit, but the rest fits what you've put up as what you want to read...
suspense, not immoral, each book under 400 pages.

The Chronicles of Chrestomanci
Howl's Moving Castle
Castle in the Air (sequel to Howl's Moving Castle)
Twilight it wasn't that suspenseful though
Summer of My German Soldier
first three are by Diana Wynne Jones, Twilight is by Stephenie Meyers, Summer of My German Soldier is by Bette Greene
the Artemis Fowl series wasn't that bad either

Sweet Blood
It's about a diabetic girl who is into vampires, but she starts getting involved with the wrong kind of people and almost dies. I think its about 275 pages or something like that, buts it's a very fast read.
