My car idles at 2000rpm so I took off the air cleaner assembly and checked it out. It seems that there is a problem with the throttle shaft (?) because it sticks if it goes down more than a quarter or an inch. I have to pull back on the throttle assembly in order for it to return to normal. Even after I do that, it still idles around 1500rpm. Is this normal in the first few minutes of operation?

How do I get it to idle normal and stop the shaft from sticking.

Unhook the throttle cable to make sure the sticking or binding problem is not with that. Spray down the throttle shaft area inside and out of the carb with carb cleaner....you may have to have the carb rebuilt with a new shaft or bushings, they do wear over time and stick. Check the choke linkage and adjustments for fast idle problems also.

does it have a return spring on it?....if yes, spray some carb cleaner around the throttle plates and free it up....it may need to be overhauled if it is gummed up too much.....good luck
