Scary movies seem to have gotten out of hand compared to the classic "scary movies" we all once enjoyed. It is beyond my comprehension to understand the thrill and enjoyment that people get from some of the scary/horror movies these days.

Because America has become so desensitized to violence and gore through the years and years of horror movies (not to mention the stuff we hear about and see in the news). The classic slashers and serial killer movies are no longer entertaining since we have seen it all before. Now it is all about the shock factor and who is going to "go there" this time.

In my opinion we need to get back into horror movies with a decent plot and characters that are developed so I actually care about them.

cwstuff - I think people want to see these things because it is a way to escape our own reality. We know it is not real, and therefore the fear we feel is exciting and entertaining. In the middle ages executions and the like were played out in the town square to make an example. A public execution is a pretty good way to get your point across. Plus, people back then seeing these executions was a confirmation that justice was served.

I agree. Horror films these days are a far cry from the early masters of suspense like Alfred Hitchcock. It used to be enough to create a sense of dread, slowly build up the tension and then add some shocks.

I watched Hostel 2 yesterday and it was ridiculous. The first 80% of the film practically nothing happens then theres a few overly graphic killings near the end and that's it. No craftsmanship to it at all, just nasty and not scary in the slightest.

well horror movies have gotten out of hand but if you want to see some good ones that are out now that give you the old school thrill, check out See No Evil and Dead Silence. those movies scared the crap out of me compared to some of those lame movies that are supposed to be scary these days

You mean like Hostel? It didn't scare me, just made me want to beat the crapp out of whoever made it. AvP-R was pretty disturbing, but at least it was just Aliens running amok - pregnant women, children and young girls were slaughtered which is getting into new and unusual territory.
Film makers keep pushing in to new twisted territory - that will never change.
It's no wonder 90% of the world rejects American pop culture and will fight wars to keep it from infecting their society. Who can blame them?

People today want to see the gore and blood, more then the actaully scariness of a movie. The demand is there for it so hollywood wants the cash. So they keep making them. which is pretty lame.

i know what you mean, at my friends birthday party it was a girls night out, and then we went back to her place and started watching some movies well she put in the exorcist, which scared the s**t out of me, and then she just had to put in see no evil which also scared the s**t out of me, and at 24 years old i'm sitting there terrified that some weird creepy dudes going to pop out of no where with some messed up pycho demon chick and they're going rip my eyes out of my head and put them in a jar. sorry if i sound a little paranoid and weird but i don't get how some people enjoy watching those kind of movies when i can't stand to watch them, especially at night.

Because your average modern-day horror writer is nothing more that a burn-out, mistaking violence and gore for horror and suspense. One day I hope that the artistic and creative passion returns to this bastardized genre.

supply and demand
I think the bigger question, is what has happened to the American public that makes people want to see gore and terror played out in front of our eyes, and call it entertainment? Didn't people from the middle ages used to turn out in the town square to see the local miscreants beheaded at the guillotine or burned at the stake for their amusement? It disgusts and frightens me, frankly.
