Just as an example, how come the top four people have the badge, then it skips, then the 6th person has it, even though the 5th person has more best answers than the 6th?

If you look closely, the 6th person does NOT have a badge in the Adolescent section. Her badges are from three different sections, Baby Names, Trying to Conceive, and Pregnancy, all in which she is one of the top 4 contributors.

A Top Contributor is a member of the Answers community who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a particular category. Each Answers user can be a top contributor in up to three categories.
The top contributor badge is dynamic you earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a particular category. The more actively you contribute, the more likely you will earn a badge. Just like featured users or category leaders, it's another way to feature community members who might otherwise be overlooked.

I'm confused too. I spend all my time in Pregnancy and Parenting. i had a top contributor badge for a while. Then, one day I decided to hang out in religion and spirituality. I lost the badge, and haven't been able to get it back!

Those who are top contributors are generally more active and use this section regularly. The other uses in the top 10 may have built up their BAs a long time ago.

i admire your solutions for the main area yet i think you haven't any longer met the requirement yet by skill of Yahoo's standards. don't experience too undesirable, i'm attempting to parent what those standards are to get to be a perfect Contributor.

Yeah, I think it depends on how active you are, exactly. They seem to keep it to themselves, though.
