While the passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory (US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico), in post-9/11 America I believe it is always wise to carry your passport if you are traveling beyond the continental states.

As I frequent traveler to the USVI, I also know how much fun it is to visit non-US islands for which passports are a must. (Many are a quick hop by seaplane or boat.)

Here is an advisory issued by the United States State Department last year:

"Implemented on January 23, 2007, ALL PERSONS traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean region are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States."

You need only a valid photo ID and your birth certificate with the raised seal to prove you are a US citizen. NO PASSPORT needed this year or next year because the USVI are territories of the USA.

However, if you plan to ferry over to the British Virgin Islands next year you will need a passport. Right now a passport to go by sea or land isn't required but those rules will change for islands that are not American next year.

Have a great time and enjoy the USVI. My favorite is St John.)

Whatever you need for a domestic flight. It's part of the United States. Just a driver's license.
