Iron doesn't belong to a family per se. It is an element (#26) found on the periodic table of elements. There are other metals that may exhibit similar characteristics as iron.

The first use of iron dates to prehistory when meteorites were smelted. Cast iron was first produced in 550 BC. I am not sure who first described the elemental properties of iron but you can look it up.
