A woman told my wife during a verbal altercation that I was sleeping with my former boss. My wife wants to leave me and we had a big fight over this in front of our children. Of course I did not sleep with my ex-boss and my ex-boss would confirm that. When I asked the woman why she made it up, she replied that she felt threatend and was trying to say anything to make my wife go away. I believe this is slander, but what our my legal options and what do I have to gain or lose by a lawsuit?

It is slader, that is an untrue statement.

The law of slander is differnt in every state. In my state in order to recover you have to show economic damages. Damages are not automatically applied. From your facts you don't appear to have any "damages" although you do have plenty of headaches. You are going to spend thousands of dollars to pursue a case like this, and then, if you recover, you are going to have to collect any judgement from this woman. This is going to just drag the whole thing out, you will still be fooling with this woman in 2009. I would forget about it.

Nothing to gain and lots to lose. I would say the time and effort should be spent working things out with your wife and staying away from the woman who started all the trouble.

a spouse should always "stand by the flag." in this scenario your wife would have come out the winner if she had not shown such an incredible insecurity. i feel for you and I'm sorry your kids had to see that.

Well, does the woman have a lot of money? If she does, you can sue for slander, intentional infliction of emotional distress, loss of consortium... If she has no money, forget it about suing.

more grief and more mud.

Let it go. If your wife believes one angry woman over you, you have bigger issues.
