How is it fair that I have to pay the same tax on goods and services that a multi-billionaire does?

That means he can afford all the things he needs to stay rich and I will never be able to change my position in life.

They should call it an "harder on others tax".

What's with the false nomenclature of Republican ideas?

"prebates" for the poor would make it EXACTLY the same as what we have right now, except that poor people could not attain real wealth - only necessities.

I have read the basics and couldn't stomach the rest - it's a call for the ghettoization of the working class.

The FairTax calculator is a joke... it asks you to put in the % of taxes you paid... how could it know what you would buy if you could?

The "FairTax" is NOT a Republican idea at all. It's from Satan as most tax plans are. A Republican tax idea would be Steve Forbes' flat tax--which also gives the masochists the option of using the current BS system to file under. As Hong Kong successfully works with exactly that choice: old style lunacy or flat tax, it CAN work here as well because they're not any smarter in Hong Kong than we are here.

The "FairTax" is one of the biggest series of lies ever told. It is an attempt to ruin the middle class and force all the poor onto every conceivable government program the fools can come up with.

Furthermore the RICH will NOT pay this tax. There ARE ways around it and they will use those ways and their tricks WILL NOT be closed off by Congress because they'll be part of the group avoiding paying the "FairTax" with the games.

You can also see with your own eyes that the "FairTax" will NOT actually prebate necessities because here's their own words:
"Why not just exempt necessities from the FairTax instead of providing for a prebate?

The prebate is the most equitable and most efficient way to make the FairTax progressive. If the FairTax were to exempt necessities, the tax rate would have to be 20 percent higher then the FairTax rate with a prebate."
http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_faq_answers

Check that out--20% higher if it exempted necessities. Also they LIE about what poor people spend money on. Just be a diabetic and not rich, but poor (diabetes is more common among the poor as well) and you can see your costs go up at least 30%:
diabetes testing strips
meds
doctors visits
Diabetics WILL spend more than what they "SHOULD" (are allotted) on food and medical care in a month. They're all SCREWED with the "FairTax."

And 30% is right, not the falsely advertised 23%--see
http://www.jewishworldreview.com/1207/page.php3
where Clarence Page shows his math skills are excellent. Now: $1.00 with "FairTax" item is $1.30--they pretend that's not a 30% rise, but 23%. They get an "F" in math and honesty.

Confront the teacher directly with a question, an open-ended question, one which the teacher can't answer with a "yes or no". For example: What happens if my child couldn't find a relative or friend to order a magazine? If this is the case and the teacher has threatened the child's recess, then a trip to the Principal's office is warranted. I just so happened to contact the school 2 of my Grandchildren attend. The parents filled out the magazine forms for both children. While talking to the Principal, she informed me that she doesn't like the magazine fundraiser because the school will see very little of the funds. She told me she feels the fundraiser is a rip off. I asked her why the classroom teacher was participating then, but she didn't have an answer. Children cannot be forced to fill out these forms or return them. I have destroyed countless order forms and envelopes that my Grandchildren brought home. The representative of the company usually sells the children at an Assembly-so the children come home revved up, ready to sell-for the cheap $store prize. I generally just donate a check to the child's school for a worthwhile project. Of course, you don't have to do that either. I would rather just give a check than receive worthless or overpriced fundraising items.

Look, the more money you make, the more taxes you normally pay. There are loop holes and many of the so called "rich" have these loop holes due to being in business. The one issue no one can explain is if you tax the rich and business more than the working man, how is that fair?

If my taxes increase, then I charge more for my services I provide. If GM or Ford are charged more taxes for each vehicle they produce, they will pass that on to the people who buy their product. This type of taxes is one reason, along with all the red tape required to do business, that company's close or move to some third world country and set up their operation because they are not killed with high taxes.

If all the companies leave America, who will pay the Taxes??? It has always fallen on the working people, no matter how much they make, to pay the taxes. If you penalize the people who work the hardest and get ahead in life, by making more money, then people will want to sit around and do nothing, cause they are taxed and penalized due to working harder.

Cant have it both ways, you either have a fair tax, such as a flat tax, or, you tax your country, business and people into the poor house.

There needs to be more discussion and more information provided before this idea can really be understood. The basics are just as some others have answered - you don't buy, you don't pay the tax. Why is it fair? Because we all are consumers...we just are limited by our income as to what we consume. Whereas a millionaire may decide he wants to buy a Mercedes Benz and you can only afford to buy a Ford - the millionaire will spend more in taxes but that doesn't mean he is going to go any faster down the highway now does it?

It's fair because you will only pay tax on what you use. Yes, the billionare will pay more in tax because he will spend more. But it is fair for everyone in that the people who are buying t-bones and driving Escalades but on welfare will now have to pay their own portion of tax on those goods, instead of depending on hard working Americans. It's up to you to be responsible with your money and save it to move up in the world (not the government). This tax would make people take responisbility for their actions. The tax in place now is harder on others - why should someone who has worked hard and invested wisely pay a larger percentage in tax for those who won't get out and get a job?

Yes, it is a national consumption or sales tax, and it should be identified as such instead of by the euphemism, "fair." I believe that it could be worked out so that it would, in fact, be fair to most Americans. The best thing about the sales tax would be that those millions of workers who are getting paid cash and don't pay any income tax, would have to pay taxes under this system.

Also, you would not be taxed on your savings, which certainly sounds fair and right to me. This feature of the plan would encourage Americans to save more money, instead of spending every penny they earn, and then some!

You can go to this site: The Fair Tax Calculator
http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=calculator&autologin=true&JServSessionIdr012=kzalg9txg4.app2b and check out how much you tax would be under this plan. Please check it out so that you can have an informed opinion about it. Thanks.

I was in favor of the fair tax at one time, but not anymore. The reason I am no longer in favor of it, is because of what I learned about income tax from watching videos like America:Freedom to Fascism, and the 6 part series called Just The Facts.....and other videos with the same basic message. I recommend these videos to everyone!!!! *sm*

I agree that the idea of the fair tax is flawed, for the very reason you state.
I would favor a combination of a federal sales tax of 6% on all goods and services (except food), and a progressive, as exist now, on incomes of over $100,000.
The fact is, people and families with incomes of under $100,000 contribute only $300 billion in income taxes. This is the lowest contributing bracket. If we replace this bracket with a 6% sales tax, more than $800 billion would be collected instead.
A sales tax would tax low income people only on what they spent, not what they earn and save. A sales tax would tax the underground economy, people who make cash, like drug dealers, but do not file income tax.
For most people with low income, their biggest expense is food and housing. With food exempt, home purchase taxed once, and rent payments exempt, the tax burden on lower income would decrease.
People with over $100K income could get a tax credit of $6000 to account for the sales tax.
In addition, a federal sales tax would tax imported consumer items. Since 99% of consumer items are produced overseas today, the USA is getting no tax benefit from production in its market. A sales tax would shift the tax burden to foreign manufacturers.
Income tax used to be supported by US production. With the shift of production overseas, that tax base is disappearing. The only way to recapture it is to put a sales tax on the items sold in our market.

Try reading up on it instead of just taking Al Frankin's word for it. For basic necessities everyone gets a prebate to cover taxes on food, clothes, etc. So the poor would pay noting except on the luxuries that they buy. The Fair tax is revenue neutral.

It amazes me how many working class people are willing to do the BOHICA just because some right wing nut job pundit tells them it is a good idea!!!

These same people scream about 'entitlements' to help the poor but think it is OK to give the likes of Paul Allen, Lee Bass and Scotty Pippen their own welfare!!
