The andromeda galaxy has produced many more stars than our own galaxy and as a result is substantially brighter, it contains less dark matter as well. The Andromeda galaxy also has a great deal of high-velocity stars, due to the gravatiational conflict between binary stars and it's super-massive black hole.

Andromeda and Milky Way are both similar looking Spiral type galaxies, though there may be some difference of subcategories (MW might be somewhat barred).
Andromeda is larger than Milky Way, having at least double the amount of stars. Andromeda is our closest major galactic neighbour.

stars in any galaxy are far from each other
there is some random dust to fill some of the gaps, but much of it is empty

Actually, empty space.
There are more cubic light years of empty space in the universe than there are cubic light years of matter of all kinds, by a VERY, VERY large factor.
