My husband's computer will not start all the way-- it will stay on the startup screen with the little thinking icon. It is a Mac G5. He says that the last time his computer worked any softwear that he had running shut down unexpectantly, like it had a virus. Any suggestions on how we can fix this problem or are we going to have to take it somewhere to get it fixed? Thanks for the help!

A folder with a question mark showing means it can't find the operating system.

Option 1:
Insert the installation disc, and restart the Mac while holding down the "C" key. After it boots from the disc (takes a while) from the top menu, select Disc Utility. perform a permissions repair on the hard drive.

Restart the Mac by quitting the installation disc.

Option 2:
Buy a copy of Disc Warrior by Alsoft. Boot from that disc, and repair the directory of the hard drive.

Option 3:
Reinstall and archive the operating system from the installation disc.

I hope he has Back Ups of all his personal data!!!

Put the OS X disk in the drive and turn on your MAC while holding down the "C" key. You should see the beginning of the OS X install routine. Follow the Options prompts to do a "Factory Clean" install with the "Save my Data files" or similar wording.

The Back question was in case you make the wrong choice and blow everything away. Sometimes it's better to have the nearest Apple Store do this for you.

You can take it into the Apple store and they will help - you can go online to find a store near you and you can even schedule an appointment with the Genius Bar on the web.

If you are somewhat savvy with Macs, you might try starting from the boot disc instead of the HD. However with the limited info you have here, it might be a problem that takes some serious know-how to work out.

I've had really good luck in the Apple forum of Craigslist.org: the people are really cool there and they know their Macs!

Ali, brillant. Painful, and unneccessary but brillant.

Anyways, Apple has free technical support at Apple stores. All you have to do is show up, and wait. I'm pretty sure they still support to Mac G5.

Although for faster service, I recommend signing up online.

Get a PC.

I'm only joking. I know nothing about macs, just that they're really easy to use until they break.

Take it to a apple shop or any other computer store. They'll help you or tell you where to go.
