I am getting a brake pads low msg on my 99 E 320 with 137k mi. Has anyone done their own brakes on these? I have done the brakes on other cars but don't know if the task is similar on these cars.... any ideas from persons who have actually tackled the task?

I would suggest you examine the rotors on your E320 at the same time the brake pads are changed. They should be smooth, level, and true with not more than 1mm of run out. Most shops will break the glaze on the rotors to enhance the seating of new pads. The rotors come off easily and can be turned and trued by local machine shops for only a few $$. On BMWs and MBz, the rotors should probably be replaced if there is more than 1mm of disc thickness worn away. Calipers and wheel cylinders should also be checked for leaks or dampness. You probably should install new pad thickness sensors when you install new pads. A change of brake fluid should be done every 2 years or 50K miles depending on your seasonal climate changes. MBz brakes are very nearly the same as any other car with 4 wheel disc brakes.

You should use this time to bleed out and change your brake fluid, it is required every 2 years. Also, the best replacement pad for this car comes from Australia, AXXIS pads. They are dust free and keep your wheels clean.. The procedure is easy, like any other. Remove old pads, push back pistons, change pads. Don't forget to lubricate your slide pins!!! E-mail me with your results!!
