FOIL . . .

(x-8)(x+7) = 0

So, "x" equals 8 or -7 when you set each individual parentheses equal to 0.

Howdy! :) Season's Greetings & Happy New Year! :) I sure hope all is well. :) As for your question:

X^2 -- X -- 56 = 0

To solve this requires factoring the equation. Doing that requires two numbers that add up to -- 1 and multiply to yield -- 56. There are four pairs of numbers that multiply to yield 56: 1 & 56, 2 & 28, 4 & 14, & 7 & 8. But of all the pairs, only 7 & 8 have a difference of one. Thus:

(X + 7)(X -- 8) = 0

X + 7 = 0 ==> X = -- 7

OR

X -- 8 = 0 ==> X = 8

I hope that helps. Good luck, take care and have a great day. :)

Cheers! :)

If you need to solve for X you would use te Quadratic Formula: X= -b± b²-4ac(square root)/2a. All you do is take the cofficent of each term and use it in the formula.For your example, the cofficent of X² is 1 so, 1 is a, the cofficent of X is 1 so 1 is b, and -56 is c. plug 1 for a, 1 for b and -56 for c. your answer should be x=7 and x=-8. You got two answers because the equation is a quadratic.

This can be simplified as equal to :

x^2 - 8x + 7x - 56 = 0

(x - 8)(x + 7) = 0

This gives x = 8 , or x = -7 as the solutions.

Well, to solve this, you need to get it in the form:

(x + a)(x + b)

Where a and b are numbers such that:

ab = -56

a + b = -1

We just do this intuitively...

56 breaks down into 7*8

If we did 7 as a and -8 as b, we might solve it:

7*-8 = -56

7 + -8 = -1

And it works, so we plug the numbers in:

(x + 7)(x - 8) = 0

So:

x = -7 and x = 8

2007-12-28 15:43:59 · answer #5 · answered by Eolian 4 · 0 0

x^2 - x - 56 = 0
x^2 - 8x + 7x - 56 = 0
x(x-8) + 7(x-8) = 0
(x-8) (x+7) = 0

So either x-8 = 0 or x+7 = 0
So x = 8 or x = -7

Hope that helps
