There are several importance of economics and why we study the subject.

1) It looks at the production, consumption and sale of goods and services, both at the level of individual products, firms and consumers and at the level of the total production and consumption by countries.

2) Intellectually Exciting: Economics is a field dealing with important and interesting subjects, like capitalism vs. socialism, management of inflation and unemployment, economic development of poor countries, pollution and global warming, energy policy, national defense, international trade and finance, social security, and many specific government policies such deregulation of electricity, the minimum wage, agricultural price supports, and rent control.

3) On an Education standpoint, It is a well recognized major in college and there are great oppurtunities at the graduate school

4) Career Preparation, Economics is an extremely practical field, and a major in economics is excellent preparation for careers in business, government, and the law, as well as for specific areas in education, journalism, foreign service, consulting and politics.

5) Students who take Economics courses are better able to think critically about policy proposals

Because it helps you to understand the consequences of government and individual actions.

Because I have studied economics (independently, not formally), I can recognize when a politian is either full of it or doesn't understand the economic implications of a policy he supports. Most of the time, it is both.

Because if you don't learn from history you're doomed to repeat it. All economics is is studying problems of the past to determine how best to avoid problems or deal with them when they arise in the future.

The same reason we read the Bible: it provides a comfortable view of the world, full of exciting myths and stories. The moral of the story is that if you work hard, you will get ahead, and that therefore god is great.
