First thing buy a plan,there are hundreds of them and they are not terribly expensive.
Once you have the plan go to the building inspector office,there they will tell you all the requirement you have to meet( lot size,space between buildind and property line,distance of set back from the road,and a lot other requirements.)
If that doesn't discourage you the next step is to hire contractors for every job to be done and deciding which job you can do yourself,the more you can do the cheaper the cost of the house will be.
Unless you have a fair amount of expertise,a general contractor will take most of the headaches off .
I have built my own house and there is no greater feeling of achievement in the world,but it will drive you up a wall again and again.

Either call someone who does that for a living and stack a bunch of cardboard boxes together. I work for a construction company and with the housing market in the drain like it is right now, you shouldn't have a problem finding someone who can help you.
