Are they for specific jobs? Or just a cheaper version of a regular laptop?

Like Dominic says mostly for work and internet. Best for a student who has a lot to carry. Also great to use while travelling. Most mini's are really loaded with features that rival a laptop. My most favorite mini right now is the new Asus Eee PC. It has no hard drive but uses separate memory type chips as the 'hard drive'. It has a 7 inch screen and looks more like a portable dvd player (with a keyboard). The advantage is that you can drop it and not damage it as easily. It's not meant for fast action gaming of course, but rather for just about anything else one does with a computer.

Work and internet related stuff, not performance gaming.
