Despite what these other people have said, the Mayan calendar only reaches the end of an age on that date. There is no evidence that they predicted the end of the world. Also I would challenge Goth's claim that ANYTHING predicted by the Mayans has come true. They didn't seem to make any predictions of the end of their own culture, so why should we believe any other predictions, even if the DID make them, which I doubt.

There is nothing astronomical which is expected to be of any significance on that date except that it's the first day of winter in the northern hem. There will be NO alignment of the sun with the galactic center, either. It will pass about 5 degrees from it, as it does EVERY year.

So both of the premises for the irresponsible "documentary" aired on television are wrong. But wait: now EVERYBODY wants to get in on the act. The Nostradamus people, again, after their miserably failed predictions of the last two decades. The Planet X and Nibiru people. Killer comet alarmists, killer asteroid alarmists, and even such recent claims as the earth is going to crash into the galactic core, we're going to get hit by a black hole, time will stop, and the earth' poles will flip over.

There is no evidence to believe ANY of this garbage. Watch. They'll be wrong and they'll either disappear for about ten more years, or make excuses, set a new, revised date, or try to find ANY disaster that happens any time that year and claim they were at least partly right. And when they do come back with more apocalyptic predictions in ten years, you can be SURE the Discovery channel, or the History channel, or Fox will be fighting to see who gets to air the pseudo-documentary that some idiot will make.

I've survived about six ends of the world. This one will be no different.

Edit: if you're a kid, don't pay any attention to bullies like one or two here, who must think it's cool to scare the cr*p out of a lot of kids when they don't have a clue what they're talking about.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, (from down below), the Bible code people are also trying to get some of the attention. I guess their "algorithm" for the last Apocalypse they predicted must have been the wrong one. It's just too darned easy for some people to get published these days.

What's this about 2012?
"This" is the most annoying question we get. There is nothing about 2012 (except, maybe, that it is a leap year and an election year in the USA).

1. The Mayan calendar celebrates the end of a Long Count on December 21 2012. The next day, the next Long Count begins. The Mayans themselves have left predictions of astronomical events which are dated for after 2012 (showing they themselves did not believe that their calendar "ended"). The Mayans were not good at predicting natural disasters.

2. No comet or asteroid will hit us. Check out this site for all Potentially Hazardous Asteroids.
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/orbits/
As of today, there are 912 of them and, of these, the number that will hit us in the next hundred years is... zero.

3. Nibiru (or Planet X or whatever else "they" have decided to call it) does not exist. It comes from errors in translation from old Sumerian texts. The original author/translator had its return pegged for 2085. It is a recent disciple of the idea that, wanting to make himself "interesting" has decided to alter the orbital parameters of this fictitious planet to have it return in 2012. His theory requires an extremely precise coincidence between the Sumerian accounts and the Mayan calendars (the two civilizations existed on different continents and at different times).

4. Earth's magnetic reversal began a few years ago. It is a process that will take a few centuries. A few years ago, when writing a book on magnetism, I had estimated that the reversal would be somewhat completed by 2350. This is the (at least) 7th reversal that we know about. There may have been more.

5. As for chaos, wars, famines, etc. We are already having those and are even helping some of them happen faster (we love that cheap oil). Apparently, we don't need a Mayan calendar for that.

6. Nostradamus never wrote anything about 2012. In fact, most of his predictions that "we" try to fit to today's events actually have to do with events that were a lot closer to his own time. Remember that the "theory" behind Nostradamus's predictions is that he wrote in code, disguising events and names so that the people he wrote about would not try to seek revenge. From that, we can conclude that most of what he wrote about were contemporary events (for him, not for us).

Predictions: The Mayan Calendar stops at 21st December 2012 - the date when they believed the world would end.

1. There have been three or four previous races and ages of humanity (depending upon the source you read). All of these have been destroyed in major cataclysms. December 21.2012 marks the end of this age and it will end in major catastrophes such as Earthquakes. (see commentary on this statement below)

2. For half of the katun (20 year Mayan cycle) there will be food, for half some misfortunes. This katun brings the end of the "word of God." It is a time of uniting for a cause.

3. As we pass through transition there is a colossal, global convergence of environmental destruction, social chaos, war and ongoing Earth changes.

4. The Earth will undergo a magnetic field shift, reversing the polarity of the planet.

5. An asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth.

Think positively in the face of the unknown!

1819 days, 9 hrs, 4 mins, 16 secs left for Age of Transition to begin!

"The Hopi and Mayan elders do not prophesy that everything will come to an end. Rather, this is a time of transition from one World Age into another. The message they give concerns our making a choice of how we enter the future ahead. Our moving through with either resistance or acceptance will determine whether the transition will happen with cataclysmic changes or gradual peace and tranquility. The same theme can be found reflected in the prophecies of many other Native American visionaries from Black Elk to Sun Bear and the great French apothecary Nostradamus...

In those day's the North Pole will be changed into the South Pole. Scientifically this can only be explained by the fact that the earth will start rotating in the opposite direction, together with a huge disaster of unknown proportions.
With clock-like regularity, sudden reversals and pole shifts are natural to the Earth. The result is worldwide destruction, and is supported by paleo-magnetic evidence and early manuscripts.

The magnetic north pole to the magnetic south pole and back. While passing this north-south axis, they will move into the direction of the equator. When they arrive there, they will join into a super powerful "ring current."

we all going to dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

2012 is sometimes claimed to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or apocalypse). Many esoteric sources interpret the completion of the thirteenth B'ak'tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar (which occurs on December 21 by the most widely held correlation) to mean there will be a major change in world order.

Accordingly, several eclectic authors claim that a major, world-changing event will take place in 2012:

The 1995 book The Mayan Prophecies linked the Maya calendar with long-period sunspot cycles.
The book 2012: Mayan Year of Destiny claims the Maya may have been instructed in their wisdom by disembodied entities from Orion and the Pleiades. Contact was maintained through shamanic rituals conducted in accordance with the movements of planets and stars. However, some Mayan priests living and working in Guatemala assert that there is no legitimacy to this theory.
The 1997 book The Bible Code claims that, according to certain algorithms of the Bible code, a meteor, asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth.
The book The Nostradamus Code speaks of a series of natural disasters caused by a comet (possibly as above) that will allow the third Antichrist to disperse his troops around the globe under the guise of aid in preparation for a possible nuclear war, although in the strictest sense it is unspecific as to nuclear war or some other natural or man caused destruction.
The book The Orion Prophecy claims that the Earth's magnetic field will reverse.
The 2005 book Beyond 2012: Catastrophe or Ecstasy by Geoff Stray reviews several theories, prophecies and predictions concerning 2012 and finds where authors have used faulty information or have bent the truth to fit their theories.
The 2006 book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck discusses theories of a possible global awakening to psychic connection by the year 2012, creating a noosphere.
The 2007 book Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation into Civilization's End by Lawrence Joseph does not make any specific new predictions, but it reviews a number of 2012 predictions made by various sources, and presents arguments for the possible existence of dangerous positive feedback loops involving solar storms, Earth's magnetic field, cosmic rays, hurricanes, global warming, earthquakes, and supervolcanoes that may be on the verge of erupting.
Other prophecies and apocalyptic writings and hypotheses for this year include:

Terence McKenna's mathematical novelty theory suggests a point of singularity in which humankind will go through a great shift in consciousness.
Some proponents of a peak oil catastrophe place major events in 2012. Richard C. Duncan's book The Peak of World Oil Production and the Road To The Olduvai Gorge claims that the Olduvai cliff will begin and permanent blackouts will occur worldwide. Several studies predict a peak in oil production in or around 2012.

Sister, whatever you've heard about 2012 is crap. Don't worry.

It's a pack of lies put together by twisting a number of completely unrelated myths and joining them together. A few people have worked out that they can make money by scaring many other people who don't know what's fact and fiction.

Please tell your friends. And learn that real knowledge comes from books and thinking, not from reading any old website and believing it must be true because it appeared on your computer.

What a crock of shizzit. The calender ended because they were too drunk and stoned to continue it that night then lost it. It was found thousands of years later.
