You are right about not buying from pet store, puppy mill or ANY breeder - good for you - they need to be stopped while millions are being killed for lack of homes. Don't EVER BUY a puppy - Don't buy while others die - opt to adopt. I actually know someone with a rescued Pom. There may be breed rescues in your area and animal shelter will have a list. PLEASE go to your local animal shelter and adopt to save a life - don't be too fussy about age or breed but you can state a general wish for the kind of dog you want - a small mixed terrier type might be suitable for you - don't think you have to start with a new puppy because you can train from beginning or whatever reason - an older dog will be so appreciative and with love, fit right in very soon. There may be puppies available through rescues people bring in and can't keep. OR check for volunteer rescue organizations and tell them you want to adopt and they'll help you pick one - that would help them with a donation and freeing up space for another rescue.
