Most octopuses (yes, that's the plural) are very timid creatures and prefer to escape trouble via a ink cloud. There is one dangerous octopus, however. It is called the blue-ringed octopus because blue rings appear on it's body when it's angry. It gives a painful bite with it's beak that can cause nausea, vomiting, extreme pain, vision problems, numbness, muscular weakness, severe breathing difficulties, nausea and floppy paralysis. You don't have to worry about him unless you go to Australia and step on it. :-)

When you see octopuses in documentaries, they always look to be minding their own business. I doubt they'd attack just for the fun of it, so I think you're fairly safe.
On the subject of blue-ringed octopuses, there is one symptom of it's bite that hasn't been mentioned above, and that is 'death'. There is no antidote for their bite, and the only way anyone who has been bitten has a chance to survive is to be put on a life-support system, or have someone do this manually until the poison leaves the system, which will take up to 24 hours.
The times that they usually bite are when people pick them up. Otherwise, they won't harm you. I've seen one that was sick in shallow water. Some kids were teasing it, and it was showing the blue rings. The rings are only small until the octopus gets upset, then they get bigger and flash a beautiful, bright blue colour.

Encountering Sea Monsters on Nature on PBS stated that the Giant Pacific Octopus he was researching is so strong that if the animal gets a hold of the seafloor and of you then you are not going anywhere and will drown. It is pivotal not to be near anything the octopus can anchor itself to with immense strength. They are just inquisitive. They have never seen a diver before and want to hold it, to touch it, explore it, find out what it is and what it does. The octopus really only presents a danger when you stay in close proximity to it. If you are minding your own business it will mind its own business and not attack you.

I hunt octopus when I go spearfishing. I don't spear them, but I poke them with the tip of the spear and they climb on. After that they start squirming around and try to get away but if you bite them right between the eyes, it severs their nervous system and they go limp. Very good eating!

I have heard of humboldt squid, which get up to 7 feet long and weighing 100 lbs, attacking a diver in one occasion, but the attack was obviously in the attempt to scare away the diver, as they just rammed him. He got away with a few nasty bruises and thats it. I have never heard of octopi attacking people though, they are usually very timid and can identify prey easily. Very intelligent creatures too, arguably the most intelligent in the sea.
*corrections* I didn't know about the blue-ringed, thanks for clearifying that. Also, I looked it up, Octopi as the plural is not proper as it is not a latin noun. Proper plural is Octopuses or Octopodes.

THE ONLY ONE YOU HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN YOU STEP ON IS THE BLUE-RINGED OCTOPUS.WHEN IT GETS REALLY MAD IT'S COLORFUL RINGS WILL TURN INTO BRIGHT BLUE CIRCLES AND IF A DIVER,A CHILD OR MAYBE A SWIMMER PICKS IT UP IT WILL TURN AND BITE WITH IT'S BEAK LIKE MOUTH INJECTING A POWERFUL TOXIN.ONE BITE HAS ENOUGH VENOM TO KILL 60 PEOPLE.THEY ARE FOUND OFF THE COAST OF AUSTRALIA.SO IF YOU'VE FOUND ONE OF THESE GUYS REMEMBER DO NOT PICK ONE UP THEY ARE CLASSIFIED AS DEADLY.
