NSW I assume? Anywhere in the innerwest is good as it is close to the CBD and quite nice.
For instance, Glebe, Annandale, Leichhardt, Balmain, Rozelle, maybe even as far south as Newtown etc. With the car, they are about 5 min away from the city centre (bus about 10-15 mins).

You can also try the innercity (technically I think Annandale/Glebe are now considered innercity). Areas such as Pyrmont, Haymarket, Ultimo etc are quite nice but very expensive. You could also veer towards the east, so Paddington, Darlinghurst . . . again, rather exepensive.

Good luck

Newtown and Erskineville are great inner suburbs as are Glebe and Annandale. You should also look at East Sydney, Surry Hills and Wooloomooloo and there are parts of Redfern that are excellent.

Ashfield is great. Serviced well by public transport. You're just 15 mins away from the CBD by car.

North Ryde is a great place, but I would suggest going further north along the peninsula to Mona Vale, Dee Why, Avalon or Manly
