The Lions started the tradition in 1934 because they were desperate to fill their stadium. They were 10-0, but weren't getting many fans at the old U of Detroit stadium. They hosted the Bears that year, had 26,000 fans turn out, and it's become a tradition since that point.

When the networks were looking for a second game in the 1960s, the Cowboys (notably Tex Schramm) jumped at the chance, for many of the same reasons the Lions had 30 years earlier. Given similar results, they were obviously reluctant to give up the idea of playing on that day every year.

It's a tradition--both teams agreed to play on Thanksgiving. The Lions have played every Turkey day since 1934, and the Cowboys since 1966.

tradition, but must remain lions vs. bears and cowboys vs.
redskins. any other teams just don't cut it playing on
thanksgiving, no matter who they are. lions could be 1 - 4, bears 0 - 5, while the cowboys and redskins both are at 2 - 3,
they are the only teams who belong on the schedule for the
last thursday in november.

I think the Cowboys thing was some kind of lame Cowboys Vs. Indians (Redskins) on Thanksgiving. I could be wrong, but that's what I had heard in past years anyway.

As for the Lions... Not sure. Maybe they're the only team bad enough to not get holidays off?

It has been a long tradition that these two teams play on Thanksgiving. They don't necessarily play each other. I think they both like to have the national and international exposure of playing on that day.

The Cowboys don't always play the Lions on Thanksgiving day! The Cowboys always play on Thanksgiving but their opponents vary. I go to many Thanksgiving day games and have seen more than just the Lions.
