Santa Claus is alive and well in the hearts of children throughout the world. Santa Claus is known by many names, but his first recorded name was Saint Nicholas. Historians claim that the history of Santa starts with the tradition of Saint Nicholas, a 4th Century Christian priest who lived in the Middle East in an area of present day Turkey.

Saint Nicholas became famous throughout the world for his kindness in giving gifts to others who were less fortunate. Typically, he placed gifts of gold down people's chimneys - sometimes into stockings. It may be that the Santa we know and love emerged from the legacy of Saint Nicholas. Clearly, Santa's basic approach to gift giving is strikingly similar to that of Saint Nicholas. What we know from history is that the tradition of Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas merged.

I know it's passe to suggest that there is a problem with reality but Santa is a textbook case. Saint, I was once told, meant Believer. Saint Nicholas was a historical figure whose bones reside in Italy. I don't see any reason not to believe in him. The relationship between him and Santa Claus is documented through such people as Washington Irving, Thomas Nast, L. Frank Baum and Clement Clarke Moore.

I honor tradition when I say that Santa Claus is Saint Nicholas, who is real even as rationalists define it. He is not just made up. I'm really irritated with those who say he is -- they are dumbing us down by telling us our history doesn't exist.

Santa Claus is real because he was already declared a saint. Therefore, if he is a saint, he can perform miracles such as giving gifts to a mass number of good children

No, I do not believe in Santa. I never have. I was not taught to believe in fictional characters. I always knew Christmas was about Jesus, not a fat man and presents.
