I ate medium rare steak all the time during my last pregnancy, and my baby turned out fine. I am also eating steak the same way this pregnancy with no problems. It's more of a personal choice and what you feel comfortable with.

you can eat it however you like. it's the same as if you weren't pregnant. the deal with steak is this...if there is any bacteria, (or a harmful level of bacteria) it is from mishandling or exposure during the processing and is on the outside of the steak. unless you pierce the steak with something and let it sit at room temp longer than 2 hours, the bacteria are not inside the meat. cooking the steak at all, whether it's rare or well, will kill the bacteria present on the outside of the steak. hamburger is another story. since that has been ground and mixed, any bacteria that were present on the outside of the meat before it was ground up, will now be incorporated into the meat and you'll want to eat hamburger well done. this is the case whether you are pregnant or not.

Well done to be sure that the bacteria is heated out.
FYI: I couldnt eat ANY red meat during my first trimester because the smell of red meat made me sooooo neasous! No matter how cooked it was, all I could smell was the blood. It was really weird. Im 21 weeks pregnant now & I can eat it.

I would say well done, but I read on ivillage.com that you can eat steak medium/rare as long as it is well brown and sealed on the outside. I personally wouldn't eat it other than well done in my pregnancy though.

Officially, all meat should be cooked through in pregnancy, however with my first one of my cravings was rare steak (I'd never eaten it rare before!!) and my baby is fine. It's because there is a slightly higher risk of food poisoning from meat that isn't cooked through :)

They recommend you eat well done cause it kills bacteria that can be harmful while pregnant. While I was pregnant I ate med. well and I was fine and like my mother said she ate in the 70's rare. The best advise is to call your Dr. and ask. It's a risk and you want to take every precaution possible to ensure a happy healthy pregnancy.

Big no no for any meat cooked rare or medium. This is only because there might still be some bacteria lying around in there that could be harmful to your baby.

Everything has to be thoroughly cooked. Unfortunately you have to ruin your beef by cooking it well done! It's a small price to pay. I couldn't wait to have a rare piece of beef after the babies were born!

I always have mine medium well. I don't like it well done. As long as it's not "bleeding" when I cut into it, I'll eat it. I've never heard that it HAS to be completely well done...and I eat a LOT of red meat, can't get enough.
