-I think of January 1, 1804 when Haiti became the first black independent republic.
-The Haitian diaspora educating themselves. Becoming lawyers, doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs. Fighting to have a better life for themselves and the family they left back home.
-The sound of beautiful Kreyol
-The sweet kompa grooves
-The awesome food: diri djon djon, legume, diri kole ak pwa, poisson frit, tassot, accra frit, I could go on and on forever about the food.
-The sounds of the "machan" selling their wares in the market every morning
-The music playing full blast from the kamyonets and tap-taps taking people to school and work
-People dancing every Kanaval season to the old greats such as Tabou Combo, Top Vice, Caribbean Sixtet and the younger bands like Krezi, T-Vice, Carimi and Djakout.
-The beautiful beaches.
-The Neg Mawon

There are so many positive things about Haiti. Unfortunately most people don't hear about anything except the abject poverty.

Haiti is beautiful. Glorious views, nice weather much of the time, and great people who are stuck in an unfortunate situation. With remarkably little effort, it could be the vacation destination of choice. All it would take would be one big company, with a lot of money and the willingness to take a chance. As soon as one makes it work, the rest will follow. Imagine DisneyWorld Port-au-Prince, or better, Universal Studios... You've got some seriously picturesque country for the movies. Get a few nice hotels and a decent security force and the economic gain will spread throughout the country. The security is the key. Nobody's going to invest that kind of money if they're just going to lose it all. Sure, it'll take time, but the rewards will be unbelievalble.

Its beautiful
The people are beautiful
The weather is very very hot at the city, but the mountains are both gorgeous to see and quite comfortably temperate. The top of Mountain Noir is cold while the city below is sizzling.
The food is wonderful - rich with the tastes of the islands, African roots and French influence.
I loved Haiti - but would not feel comfortable returning..

Later: I cannot imagine why I am getting thumbs down on this answer. I loved Haiti - is that upsetting someone?

I think of the book, "The Serpent and the Rainbow" by Wade Davis. I read it a few years ago, and it gave me (a tiny bit) of understanding/appreciation of Haitian culture.

I expect there are many useful remedies and chemical compounds that are known only to the medicine men of Haiti. It would be beneficial to humanity if there were a way to exchange this type of information across cultures.

I also think of the ideals of freedom, independence, self-determintation and rejection of slavery that were present at the country's founding.

Haiti has greatly distinguished itself from all the other Caribbean islands by being one of the last French colonies to get independence. This has resulted in an amazing culture different from most other island nations.
