point spread? How much a team will win by (points) made by the oddsmakers

A "spread" is an allowance in points, given as odds to the weaker team to make the eventual outcome a 50-50 bet.

Say the New England Patriots are playing the Miami Dolphins (like they just did.) If the bets were simply even, everyone would bet on the Patriots. To get the total betting to 50-50, oddsmakers give points, called "the spread." It would be stated as either New England - 22 1/2, or Miami + 22 1/2.

Meaning, to win a bet on the Patriots, the team would have to win by 23 points - 23-0, 37-14, whatever. If the Patriots win 22-0, say, they didn't "cover the spread" and a bet on Miami would win, and a bet on the Patriots would lose. Make sense?

It refers to the point spread created by oddsmakers for gambling purposes. To use an example from this week:

New England -14.5 NY Giants

That means that New England is favored by 14.5, and if you place a wager on them they will need to win by at least 15 points. If you pick the Giants, they'll need to win, or lose by less than 15 points.

The point spread changes during the week, depending on how much "action" (ie. bets) are placed on a given team. In the example I used, if everyone started placing bets on the Patriots, the spread would increase.

It is a number of points added to the underdog's score for betting purposes to bring the game closer to an even game of chance.

Take the Patriot*** - Jet game for example. The early point spread was Jets + 27. Patriot*** fans foolishly placed their money on the Patriots*** to win by more than 27 and then lost their wagers when the actual margin of victory was only 10.
