No the pill would not be too effective. Doctors advise that women use a second form of birth control the first month on the pill for this reason. If you had sex and started your birth control the next day you could get pregnant.

It take at least a full month of taking the pill in order for it to be at its 99% effectiveness.

When you first take the pill you should use condoms for the first two weeks at least.

Even after that month, you still risk pregnancy as nothing is 100% effective except for abstinence.

You could still get pregnant. Be aware too that if you are pregnant the pill could hurt the fetus. If you are having symptoms of pregnancy I would take a test as soon as possible.
