The Bible speaks of some "teaching" other gospels. How many gospels are there?
I think the Jewish apostles were saying that Christian followers of Jesus were teaching another gospel. Run for the scriptures.

Ooh yay, a Bible lit. question...

No, the Jews did not call their religion "gospel". Gospel means "good news", literally, and referred to the fulfillment of the Jewish prophecies of the coming Messiah. So it is pretty much a monopoly for the Christians.

But you have heard of the Apochrypha? The Gospel of Thomas, etc. Gospels that are not kept among the finished works of the Christian Bible today, except among various Catholic versions. These are books/documents that were not viewed as authoritative, and even in the Catholic church, they are merely there for background information on the historical and political views of the time, because much of what they say is contradictory to the first four books of the New Testament, the original Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

There were a lot of fake ones running around, and people were listening to them. During a time when a city had maybe one "bible", it was very important that they had a good one.
