I get 62%.
There's 60% men and 40% women.
50% of 60% = 30% and 20% of 40% = 8%
30% + 8% = 38% of all members do play tennis
100% - 38% = 62% do not play tennis.

That's it! :)

Ok, so you know that 20% of the women play tennis and 50% of the men play tennis. You also know that the membership is 60%-40% men to women.

To find who does NOT play tennis:

50% of 60% is 30%. In other words: half of the men, who make up 60% of members, do not play tennis. Half of 60% is 30%.

80% of 40% is 32%. In other words: 80% of the women, who make up 40% of the membership, do not play tennis. This represents 32% of the total membership.

32% and 30% gives you 62% who do not play tennis.

Checking this against common sense shows that this is a good answer. Half of the men don't play tennis, and well over half of the women don't play, so you would expect a number that is greater than 50%.

Good luck with your test!

Suppose there are 100 members.
Of these 60 are men and 40 are women.
50% of 60 = 30 and 20% of 40 = 8
Hence 38 member play tennis and 62 do not
=> 62% of members do not play tenns.

Suppose you had 100 members. Since 60% are men
then 60 members would be men, 40 would be women

Half the men don't play tennis = 30 members
80% of women don't play. 80% of 40 = 32

A total of 62 out of 100 members don't play,
or 62%

For me, it's easiest to picture if you plug in some real numbers. For example, pretend there are 100 people in the club (any other number will do as well, but "100" is convenient).

> "60% of all members are men"

This means the club has 60 men and 40 women (using our made-up example of 100 total people).

> "20% of women... play tennis."

20% (one fifth) of the 40 women play tennis. This means the number of women tennis players is (20%)(40) = 8.

> "50% of men play tennis."

50% (one half) of the 60 men play tennis. This means the number of men tennis players is (50%)(60) = 30

So, the total number of people who play tennis is:
8 women + 30 men = 38 people.

The total number of people who DON'T play tennis is:
100 people - 38 people = 62 people.

This means the percentage of people who don't play tennis is: 62/100 = 62%.

62% do not play tennis

Solution
Since 60% in the club are men, 40% are women.
50% of men play tennis so 30% of club members are men who play tennis. (60% * .5 = 30%)
20% of women play tennis so 8% of club members are women who play tennis. (40% * .2 = 8%)
Therefore 38% of club members do play tennis, so 62% do not play tennis.

Howdy! :) Season's Greetings and Happy New Year! :) I sure hope all is well. :) As for your question, I hope the following proves helpful:

Suppose there are 100 members in the club.

We are given that 60% of them are men, that is 60 of them are men. That leaves 40 women.

We are also given that, of the 60 men, 50% play tennis. That means 30 men play tennis.

And we are given that, of the 40 women, 20% play tennis. That means 8 women play tennis.

So, in total, 38 people play tennis, which leaves 68 who don't.

I hope that answers your question to your satisfaction. :) Good luck, take care and have a great day. :)

Cheers! :)

60% of members are men
50% of men play tennis   ⇒   50% of men do not play
60%·50% = 0.6·0.5
                = 0.30
= 30% of members are men who do not play

60% of members are men   ⇒   40% of members are women
20% of women play tennis   ⇒   80% of women do not play
40%·80% = 0.4·0.8
                = 0.32
= 32% of members are women who do not play

30% + 32% = 62% of members do not play

30% of club are men who do not play tennis
8% of club are women who play tennis
