Funny you should ask. I remember making my doll an outfit and I was about 8 or 9 years old. I think it was with felt and I used ribbon or rick rack on it. I had gotten a kids sewing machine for Christmas. I suppose I out grew it and it was sold at a yard sale or something. Well, anyway, THIS Christmas, my mom got me the same one.... a vintage from the 50's! She happened to find it at a yard sale and I am just pleased as punch as it was so reminiscent of the one that I had when I was a kid! It's a CASIGE. I happened to see that there are some on Ebay too so there are a few out there if you care to take a look.
I now spend more time making quilts, you can see them here: http://needlewings.blogspot.com

I think it was hemming the edges of a piece of fabric to make a doll blanket. I was maybe 5 or 6.
First in school project was a pillow (everyone had to make one). My next project was a 2 piece suit (skirt and jacket) with a nice top.
25+ years after the doll blankets I'm still sewing. I just made my husband a pair of pants for Christmas. They're red and have gold dragons on them.

I think the first thing I ever sewed was a badge onto my brownie uniform! My first "grown up" sewing project was a tunic for an SCA feast. I've made a few since then, and they are all bad in different ways :( I've got a lot more to learn about dressmaking!

In Jr. High home ec we did Animal pillows, Stuffed animals and an apron. I still have the apron over 20yrs later! Nice keepsake! And out of school, my grandmother taught me to sew by hand and we made Barbie clothes.
It has grown from there to me making doll clothes in my early 20's for my daughter. Then I discovered how much I liked it, I started making cloth dolls and doll clothes, then got into quilting, hand embroidery and then got into machine embroidery. I'm 41 now.

A skirt when I was in 9th grade home ec. Didn't want to make it, but had to. Picked out the UGLIEST color I could find so I would never have to wear it. To this day, I still hate to sew!

I made my first project in grade 7. It was a striped denim gym bag back in 1958.

A red and white doubleknit jumper with a heart on the front, done with fusible webbing. I also made a white jersey shirt to wear under it. I made it in 9th grade home-ec.

I made a tiny doll pillow. It was really small, red with black thread. Duhh...... I still have it. My daughter uses it with her little dolls. It's really old too.
