Ignore all that crap about being perfect. It's marketing -- that if you don't look a certain way or use a certain product, you're a complete loser. It's just a variation of what's foisted on straight folks.
Also, advertisers targeting the gay community love to use pictures of buff twentysomethings -- it's the decades-old formula of "sex sells."
And of course, good old porn generally features only very attractive men.
To answer your question, there are indeed a lot of very shallow and vapid gay men, not to mention unintelligent, frankly. I think they have a certain level of unhappiness and/or discontent -- or good old guilt about being gay -- so they try to compensate by living a faaaaaaabulous life.
So you have a choice -- you can either just be yourself and find others like us who are similarly down-to-earth and smart enough not to slavishly follow every fad and fashion, or you can continue striving to be "perfect" and with it and cool and trendy.
And if you choose the latter, be sure and take your vitamins and get plenty of rest -- you're in for a very tiring existence.

Well, I know that isn't true. Yes, there are a lot of cute, hot, sexy gay guys who work out and stuff but my best friend is gay and he is in a totally monogamous relationship with a guy who's attractive but not the usual buffed out dudes. (I live in S. California. They have a really solid relationship. Before my friend found this person, he went through a period when he'd only go for guys with looks, but he realized that what he wanted was a sincere and stable relationship. They're even going to Italy in April! So please don't give up hope. I would stop going to those bars where all of the guys are into looks and being superficial. It does not matter how *pretty* you don't think you are. EVERYONE deserves love, and I fully believe you can find it too. Just look past that whole looks thing and try to find the good in the person within. He's out there; just keep trying. I bet you'd make a good catch for anyone special. There are a lot of guys who are into the same things you are, and they're smart and caring. Good luck to you. Do not settle for second best just because some guy is *hot*. You sound just fine to me. It's just like a heterosexual relationship- you need to get past all of the looks business and look for their character.

Shallow people are shallow, no race or sexuality wins the prize. But gay community : yes, very shallow. Lack of self respect. Only normal. Will get better with each new generation.

Who cares what others think. The majority of the guys I have known like that, end up unhappy....in failed relationships...always looking for the next best thing....I pity them.
Be yourself. Not everyone is a fashion queen. Some of us are real ordinary everyday folks. And we love you no matter what.

ever heard the phrase "don't believe your own press"?... the stereotypes portrayed in mass media are mostly created by straight people so that they can point out our differences... to put us in a neat tidy little box and label us... we are as diverse acting and appearing as any other group of people... because we are in and belong to every group of people... if you were to get your knowledge of straight people from watching "Baywatch" you might have the same misguided notion....

Shallowness appears in many people. It is not dependent on their orientation, income, educational background, or anything else.
Just be happy with the person that you are. If you do make changes to yourself, make them to make yourself happy, and not to make anyone else happy.
