Good question. I think that the biggest deterrent is the cost of solar panels themselves. Although they are relatively simple in nature and materials, for some reason they are tremendously expensive. What a shame.
Imagine a railway locomotive moving entirely on the power of the sun simply by obtaining solar power from 4 or 5 boxcars with panels on the roof and batteries in side the cars.
Yet no one dares? Why?

Ummmm, just a guess but, mayyyyyyyyyyyyybe, just maybe our Gov't and BIG Oil companies & Generally, Big Business may have something to do with it.....ya think?
Venezuela, has more oil than they know what to do with. Yet, they are producing ETHANOL as an ALTERNATIVE Fuel....So, with that in mind, here's a Country with an ABUNDANCE of Oil Reserves yet they look for ALTERNATE fuels.....and the World hates Chavez... Ya gotta wonder....maybe 'he' is on to something?

Simply because oil is cheaper to obtain.

Because oil is still cheaper and more effective and thereby more cost effective.
