Well, the greatest American novel I've read would have to be Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. It's long, but a classic in America.

Huckleberry Finn is generally considered that, but I would say it was The Great Gatsby or Of Mice and Men- perfect scorns of 'The American Dream' (i.e. the dream to be rich and successful)

The only one that truly qualifies is "The Great American Novel" (Yes that's the title.) by Phillip Roth. (One of Roth's characters, by the way, rates all the other candidates for great American novel.)

if you have not read this, you SHOULD!!! it is a great book. it is hard to explain why it is a great American novel, but it is, once you read it, you will understand.
