I just received my first pay slip and I see that they only paid me for 1 hour on my first day. I was there from 10 - 3, so 5 hours but they only paid me for one. I think they did this because I was actually on the tills (I work as a sales assistant in Boots) from 2 -3, the rest of the time I was watching health and safety videos, signing papers and going through all the requirements and things I have to do.

Instead of blowing your top and putting the boss offside. Why dont you just query this at the end of your next shift.
Its not illegal but most companies do pay for the induction training.
If you ask you will recieve.
I remember my first job, I had 3 hours induction training on a Monday and started on the Thursday.
I wasnt paid for the training until the second paycheck so only can find out whats happening.

Don't jump in with a complaint, like Cheryl O says it's probably just a mistake. I suspect the pay people were aware of your presence on the tills (via the log-on system) but no-one told them you were there the rest of the time. Not your fault, an error by whoever was supposed to be in charge of your induction. Just mention it politely to your supervisor.

You don't have to complain, just ask if your wages are correct as you were in from 10-3 but only got paid for 1 hour. See what they say, may just be an errror from wages department. You should have been paid for it!
Good luck!

I certainly find it hard to believe an employer can deduct wages for time spent in staff training which in effect is what you were doing.

That's all part of your job and you were present at your place of work.

I've never come across this before and I deal with training a great deal in the public sector.

I think you do need to raise the issue with your immediate supervisor.

Yes you should have been paid, you were giving up your time to train for your position.

It is likely just a error with a company like boots, speak to wages, you don't need to go in hard with a complaint.

It is wrong and could be a genuine error so have a word with your immediate supervisor first of all and then take it higher you were acting under the instructions of the Company as part of your employment
