The motherboard is the main circuit board inside your computer. It's what all the parts of the computer (the RAM, Video Card, CPU, Sound Card, Hard Drives etc.) plug into to communicate together. Basically, if you think of the computer like your body, the CPU or Processor is the Brain, and the Motherboard is the central nervous system which lets the brain tell the rest of your body what to do. Sometimes the motherboard can go bad on you, and as a result the messages between components can't get through and the computer turns into what is basically a very expensive paper-weight. Depending on the system and the manufacturer the motherboard can cost anywhere between 150 and 500 dollars to replace. Replacing a motherboard is not an easy task, it requires you to pretty much disassemble the entire computer and then put it back together again. So, unless you really know what you are doing, take it in to be serviced.

If you want more information on what a motherboard is and how it works etc, wikipedia has a decent article on it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motherboard

Hope that helps
