I have had 3 vacuums die in about 5 years. I clean them out, take them apart to look for clogs but after a while they just don't work very well anymore. Right now I am stuck with a 6 month old vacuum that doesn't really work very well. I am wondering if that is a very common experience.

What vacuum do you love over the long haul?

I've had the same vacuum for 15yrs, no repairs, no problems whatsoever. It's a Kirby, I know people complain about them being heavy but that is for a reason, they do last!:)

I have had numerous vacuums. But I have the last one I'll ever need now. I bought a Dyson Ball. Unbelievable vacuum, like no other. My last one the Hoover Z worked good, but had so many unlikeable things about it, besides being heavy and clumsy, that I bought the Dyson a year later. Invest in whatever Dyson model works for you and you'll never have to buy another one. Dyson is just in a league of their own, and there is no comparison to any other. Now I can easily vacuum anything and everything I want!

We go to a vacuum store and buy commercial ones. So far we have bought two Eureekas.

The "new" one is 15 years old. The old one is 25 yrs old. I did install brushes in the old motor once.

We replace the belts every 6 months for maximum traction on roller. Change bags when 1/4 full. We buy the HEPA bags at Walmart - not expensive at all.

These things go and go. Dyson has great suction, but they don't weigh enough to drive a beater bar that actually shakes the dirt by vibration so the vacuum action can suck it up. We have deep pile carpet (but not shag). The carpet is about 12 years old, and still looks great. (We buy the carpet with the Teflon treatment.)

I have had a purple Dyson for 3 years now.
I think it is the best.
Here are the vacuums I have used in last 7 years:
Oreck
Hoover Wind Tunnel 2
Hoover Wind Tunnel
Hoover
None of them are even close to the Dyson! It is so worth the money!
