The earth does heat up and cool down naturally, but we are forcing it into a regime that would not naturally occur. By adding carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases like CFCs into the atmosphere we are forcing the earth to retain more heat than it would otherwise, because these gases will absorb the heat energy that would be going up from the earth and out to space and are sending back to the ground, and warming the planet. It will only get worse as we dump more of such gases into the atmosphere.

In your other question, you think that this is some sort of conspiracy between scientists and the government to increase taxes. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, in the US, the government has been trying to DOWNPLAY global warming and act like is nothing to worry about, and at the same time has SUPPRESSED the speech of some of the scientists that warn us about it.

I'm working on a Ph.D. in Climate Science and believe me, global warming is real, but it is not our biggest problem, overpopulation is. I believe that we will be "saved" from a horrible climate disaster by running out of cheap fossil fuels, which will lead to an even greater humanitarian and economic crisis.

And while I'm on this soapbox, I'll add that the truth of global warming has NOTHING to do with whether or not you like Al Gore. He is only passing on the science, not creating it. Sure, not everyone agrees on all the details, but I'd say that greater than 95% of climate scientists believe in human-induced global warming. Maybe the climate modelers have it wrong, but the question is, do you really want to run an experiment on the livability of the entire Earth to prove that they were wrong?
