There are a lot of solid differences between the types, but I'll try to be as breif as possible:

Thrash metal usually has a fast tempo, with a lot of palm muting to create a "chugga, chugga" sound. It usually has fast tempo and time shifts. Examples would be Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer.

Don't know a lot about metalcore, but you could look it up.

Death metal usually consists of down-tuned guitars playing heavy riffs throughout the song, usually doesn't consist of many melodic riffs, however the subgenre Melodic Death Metal, consists of a very large amount of melodic riffs, so go figure. Death metal also consits of fast tempos and blasting drum beats.

Power metal is a more European style, it was more famous a while ago. Power metal was expressed through Glam Metal, which was a bunch of guys dressed like chicks on stage with guitars. It was the more epic metal with bands like Europe(lol), Queensryche, Queen.

Nu-metal usually consists of heavy, old-school guitar riffs, with rap-influenced vocals and hip hop beats from a DJ.

Thrash is essentially just fast heavy metal - but has a hardcore influence Death metal takes influences of both but adds growled vocals, as opposed to those sung or shouted. That's the difference. They are all similar in the respect that they use distorted guitars, power chords, chugging, stuff like that.

thrash and death are different, the songs that are death-y are about pain and suffering, whereas thrash can almost be happy.

There are absolutely none, they are completely separate and distinct forms of music...

...Not!

(I'm getting sick of all the sub-genres and sub-sub-genres and micro-genres. Musicians don't really care about those kinds of distinctions anyway, thats for the marketing people trying to make music into just another business product - and they have got you all chiming in like trained monkeys)

there arent many similarities.

thrash is fast. it has singing that is non-melodic. it has a guitar solo in most songs. plus its way better.

death is fast. it has screaming, grunting, and pig-squeling(otherwise known as breeing) vocals. there arent many solos. you cant really hear the kick drum at many times.
