It is considered a greenhouse gas. And it is a powerful one, but it is not long lived in the atmosphere. It only lasts about 12 years in the atmosphere before it is broken down to CO2 and water.

Since we are in a current greenhouse gas frenzy, that is probably the answer that was looked for. Methane is a very small portion the atmosphere and quickly degrades to CO2 and water, also greenhouse gases.

Methane is a greenhouse gas which will trap heat in the earths atmosphere just like carbon dioxide.
