I did that at Midnight Mass when I took communion and the priest said "the body and blood of Christ" I said Thanks. lol he was upset with me.

When the priest says holds up the Host and says, "The Body of Christ," the proper answer is "Amen" because that means "I agree." If you don't say that, the priest cannot know that you believe that the Host is truly the Body of Christ. Technically, it would be wrong for him to give you the Host if you do not agree that the Host is the Body of Christ, so that's why he looked concerned.

It's not wrong to say thanks, but you should always say "Amen" first. The fact that you don't know this already is a concern; your religious education must be lacking.
