I'm trying to unblock Windows Live Messenger on my Windows XP Home Edition. I can access my firewall, however the two buttons 'configure' and 'disable' are nowhere to be found when I open my firewall. Do I have to be logged in to the master Rogers-Yahoo email account to see those buttons? I'm logged in on the admin account for the actual computer.

Access the Norton firewall, click on settings, a menu should come up. Click on "Personal Firewall", then click "Turn off"

OK, I must inform you upfront that I do not like Norton.

With that said, as you are using an Admin account, you should be able to go into the programs firewall area which lists the programs that have permission to go through your firewall. On that page there should be a button to add, delete, or manage the programs already listed.

In my program, I would look in the list to see if it there. If it is, I would then uncheck the box in front of, "Automatically apply these permissions". Unchecking this box is neccasary in order to configure any of the listed programs. Once I have that unchecked, I can select which type of permission I wish a particular program to have. For a Messenger program you would need to set both "incoming and outgoing" permissions.

If the program is not listed, I click Add, then browse to the executable of the program I want to configure permissions for. I usually locate the executable in the Program Files list first, so it is easier to browse to it from inside my Panda firewall. Once I have browsed to the programs executable, I click on it, then click Open and the configuration pages open, which I set and then it adds it to the list.

There must be a simular process in Norton. Most firewalls are very simular in configuring. If you are unable to access the permissions, then perhaps it might help to remove the program from the firewall and then re-add it via the add button.

If none of this helps, open up Norton's help files and locate the instructions on adding a program to the firewalls allow list and on how to configure its permissions.

If you are still having issues, you may need to remove the program and then reinstall it. Sometimes a file in the program will become corrupt, which can interfer in the programs functionality. I know it is a hassle, but it might need to be done anyway.

Good luck and much success configuring Norton.
