Do you remember when the sign with the arches said, 10,000 served? McDonald's was launched by Ray Croc in l955, over a half century ago, and now it serves 27 million customers a day!
But McDonald's was not the pioneer in the fast food business- Steak n' Shake started in Normal, Ill in l934! How things change--and how they remain the same!

I don't eat there often, either--just an occasional fish sandwich. I used to love their fries but since they stopped using lard to fry them, they aren't as good. Not really my cup of tea either!
I do remember the White Castles, in Chicago. I knew they had been around a long time, too. Now, those were good! And the Wimpy One Bites! And of course White Tower.

Yes I remember when they first opened up in my area, and yes they used to have a running tally of how many burger had been sold. Then it got over a certain number and they stopped doing that. I do love their sausage, egg, McMuffin. and sometime I get a double cheeseburger, their only $1,00,
or a spluge for a Big Mac. But I don't make it a practice.
Actually I prefer TACO BELL and remember them when they had .25 Tacos. I really had a craving for them when I was pregnant with my first child in "71", and still frequent Taco Bell.
my favorite fast food.

Gee, is this a competition?
I started eating McDonald's in the 1950's in San Bernardino, CA, at store No. 2. Kroc BOUGHT the company from the guys who ran that store.
The there's Mr. Wian, who in the 1930's invented the double burger at his Glendale, CA, store named Big Boy. I lived down the street from his most famous location in toluca Lake until just a few years ago - and did PR for his company for 2 years just after it was bought up (and ruined) by Marriott.
"Fast food" probably was popularized at the Chicago World's Fair in the 1890's - waffle cones, some say hot dogs, some say hamburgers - the list is pretty long. But I credit Nathan's and its Coney Island hot dog wagons with really kicking it off. That was before 1900.

We used to go to White Hut Hamburgers in Toledo with my parents in the middle 1950. Burger Chef was the first fast food place in my town in 1961, followed in the next 5 or 6 years by McDonald's. They were joined in the 70s by Burger King and Wendy's.

Actually, I think the fast food industry was started by White Castle in 1921 in Kansas. I believe that the burgers were about 5 cents each back then.

The McDonald's near where I lived started with a higher number.
Actually one of the pioneers in the fast food business was Nathan's Famous in NYC (Coney Island to be exact). The place opened in 1916 as a simple hot dog stand.
Also White Castle started up in 1921.

Since as far back as I can remember. Red and white tiles, ordered outside and I thought it was so cool to be able to go and sit on the ledge on the side of the building with the big kids. Back then I don't think they had anything but hamburgers, cheeseburgers and fries. (But then I don't know.....I couldn't read yet.) It was our routien Friday night treat. Did it till we got our first Burger King and then ventured forth after that. It's nothing like it used to be and I rarely go anymore.

Never was a big McDonalds fan. But of course the kids love it. So I usually have a salad or chicken sandwich. The oldest are in their 30s now so quite a few years.

I remember McDonald's from the late 1950s. We did not go very often but when we did I truly enjoyed it. I remember their chocolate shakes use to be so good! I remember when you walked up and ordered from outside before they enclosed the restaurant. Sure could use a burger right now, not necessarily McDonald's.

I first heard of McDonald's in the second grade-we used to get to go there on special occasions only-like birthdays or if parents were going out and leaving us with a babysitter. That would have been 1962 in the LA area. I remember when Taco Bell's menu only had 4 items and each was 25 cents.
So Glad to see you back Gladys!!
