dude i know exactly what you mean. I think the movie is entirely over-rated. There are like 100 other movies where a kid befriends some strange creature and everyone else and the government wants it dead but then boom this one becomes a hit for some reason. I find the creature that is ET rather creepy too. If it makes me heartless that i don't shed a tear when ET is dying then i guess im heartless, the movie is way over-rated

ET was one of, if not, the first movies ever about an alien from another planet who was NICE! Before ET, aliens were always portrayed as our enemy. ET finally told the story of an alien being our friend. And ET was not made on a 'big budget'! It had a moderate budget. Spielberg was filming (that same year's) 'Poltergeist' and wanted to do a movie next that was simular yet opposit. The movie did have some good special effects, but was in no way dependent on those fx. It was just a story about friendship, told in a way that hadn't been told before. A hundred copy-cat movies came out after ET, some of them way better, but none had the 'magic-in-the-moment' that only ET had. And no other 'alien/boy' movies can claim it. :)

Ok if you've not seen ET, you're not human. That movie was an epiphany for movies. Stephen Spielberg knew what he was doing when he made that. I still remember it was released on VHS 11 years after it's release in theatres. It was a HUGE breakthrough in movie history, and that is what's being recognized. Matching it up with today's films, yeah it can be cheezy, but that thing was as big as Star Wars back then......

Well you see ET was made what a long time ago. When people were bored and didn't know better. And the movies were bad then. So everybody watched it and now they are calling it the best family movie. I think its not very good movie. If they made it today it would be much better. But yeah I agree with you.
Hope this helps :)

I totally agree, I was bored from begining to end and think it is highly overrated.
On the other hand 'Oliver', the musical from the 60s, is a masterpiece and deserves the first place. Ron Moody was outstanding and Jack's death was very sad.

I'm guessing back in the day it was the best special effects money could buy. Great marketing brainwashed the human cattle type to love it.

Today, it looks like crap..

E.T. appeals to a very universal feeling when you're a kid, mainly loneliness. Elliot was a loner and didn't fit in. Having E.T. around gave him a friend and made him feel special.
