Absolutely they do. Horses can get many of the same diseases which people do, such as West Nile Virus, for example, and the flu, tetanus, and encephalitis or sleeping sickness. Horses can also contract rabies, and most states in the US have laws which require vaccination against this disease. ALL horses need shots, but especially those which are going to be competing or are going to be shipped or sold across state lines.

Hope this helps.

YES! they need yearly vaccinations just like any animal. Even livestock need to be vaccinated. Depending on where you live they will need certain shots, like west nile, and a de-worming program. Contact a vet or horse person to see which shots and wormer they need. You can have an experienced friend help give the shots, its way cheaper to buy them and do it yourself, I do

Yes, they need shots. You'll also want to do a coggins report on them if you intent to board them or to transport them. Be careful of the new west nile shots, i had a horse that got pneumonia from the shot twice and we had to stop vaccinating her for that one.

No, not legally, unless you are going to some show or race grounds where they require them. There aren't as many nasty distemper like diseases horses can get, so shots are usually only tetanus and influenza. I think the influenza one is a waste of money, but most show grounds insist on it, and you have to have it every year
